the mexican capital #2

Teotihuacan is about 1 hour by bus north east of the city. There are organised tours to get out there but after a bit of research I figured I could just get the subway and then the bus so got on my way nice and early to try and beat the crowds.

Gazing across to The Pyramid of the Moon from The Pyramid of the Sun

My first taste of the ancient ruins on this continent was pretty incredible, climbing the 248 steps of The Pyramid of the Sun with some nice views across to the Pyramid of the Moon. I am still working on getting the right distance for my self-timer on my camera hence I’m not in this one but I get a goodie when I get to the other pyramid below.

Casually on the edge of a pyramid

Having enough of the hot sun and the crowds pouring in I grabbed a bus back to the city and headed for the Museo Nacional de Antropolgia. I find museums quite hard work when all the information is in a foreign language but this one has English subtitles 🙂

Before I made it inside though there was this going on in the nearby park…yes they are hanging upside down, twirling around by a rope tied to their feet and still blowing some whistle and drum. I found out that it is Voladores de Papantla, an ancient religious ritual.

Voladores de Papantla = dizzy and head rush

This was probably the coolest piece in the museum although I didn’t get around the whole thing. This is Piedra del Sol, an Aztec sun stone which was found in 1790 and features on the back of the 10 peso coin. There are many theories about its meaning but still no common conclusion has been reached. The museum actually installed this first and then built the museum around it as its so big and heavy, I cant remember how much but lots and lots.

Can you spot the gods

Wow what a big day being a tourist, my feet were definitely starting to feel it and no doubt when I checked my phone I realised I had walked 27km. Buenas noches

…Next up, couch surfing in Puebla.
